The President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) is a U.S. government program that delivers cost-effective, life-saving malaria interventions alongside technical and operational assistance to equip and empower partner countries to end malaria. PMI now works in 24 partner countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
HJFMRI’s subsidiary in Nigeria supports PMI efforts to combat malaria in the region. Malaria has remained a cause of significant morbidity and mortality in Nigeria. Access to malaria testing and diagnosis is critical to malaria elimination. To advance these capabilities, a Nigeria-U.S. collaboration was launched to develop Nigeria’s first-ever Malaria Slide Bank with funding from PMI. This resource provides standard, validated slide sets for use in malaria trainings and in healthcare facilities. The partners participating in the slide bank project are the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) and the U.S. Army Medical Research Directorate-Africa in Nigeria (USAMRD-A/N), partnered with the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP), the Nigerian Ministry of Defence, and the State Ministries of Health in Benue and Akwa Ibom, supported by HJFMRI.
